[TRANSLATED] The downside of bio-fuels

American president Bush put forward plans to replace petrol consumption with bio-ethanol. This has had a direct impact on the daily life of Mexicans by inflating the price of corn, a staple food of the country. This represents a severe downside of bio-fuels. Research has shown that the most effective method of reducing greenhouse gas emmissions is to reduce transport fuel consumption, rather than replacing fuel sources. The amount of reduced carbon dioxide emission from bio-ethanol is far lower than what is produced through rising levels of fuel used for transport. Therefore bio-ethanol merely allows people to continue driving their cars with good conscience.
