The world cares, too.

What an excellent article! I am very pleased to see that environmental issues are being discussed in China at last. Here in Australia I write educational books on the environment for children, and I have just written a chapter on the baiji and the finless porpoise. I have included this article for their research. Good luck to all Chinese who care for the environment - the world cares with you!

education can help

I work with kids in the United States on many kinds of watershed projects. My books also help educate them about nature and I believe we can find ways to protect the Finless Porpoise by partnering with projects in the United States. I remember with great sadness, writing about the Baiji several years ago. At that time the Three Gorges Dam had not been built and we all knew it would be the end to the Baiji - Goddess of the River.

Now, it is time to find ways to save the Finless Porpoise. For my part, I have begun a book called "The Littlest Whale" and will work with young people in the US to put together educational and fun writings for kids in China, hoping to connect with some schools along the Yangtze. I will also direct interested people to send contributions to the Baiji Foundation. Please see www.ronhirschi.com for ideas on how to get kids excited about helping their own local watersheds.

Things just go bad whenever it comes to capital. Those digging sand in Yangtze for sale will never give up this chance to make quick money no matter how much education you give them.

re:what can i do?

Sarah, thank you for your kindly tending to help this endangered animal. I suggest you visit http://www.ibaiji.org/index.asp, which is a website of conservation of foundation for porpoise. I am not sure if you can handle Chinese because this website is mainly in Chinese. It does have a English version(http://www.ibaiji.org/englishv.asp), but it's very simple and not specific. Please contact me via haiyan.yin@chinadialogue.net if you need any further help.
Thank you very much. ----- Haiyan

what can i do?

Is there anything individuals can do to help save this porpoise? I cannot find a donation programme or campaign to put pressure on local government or business groups. Is there any such thing?

Experts say: if Baiji cannot be found in the next 60 years, then they have to declare its extinction.

is there a solution?

Now,as you can see, the weak education of the people is the main reason that the Yangtze River gets worse and worse.
People know nothing that what will happen if they keeping dredging in the river. Thus, our government should educate the people what they should and what shouldn't do. Well, as you can see, many people live on the sand selling 100,000 yuan per night! So the education is not enough, they need another way to make money.
