This article rightly emphasises the value of resilience. Local decisions over how ecosystems are used (or abused) are crucial. The example Beverley Darkin gives of water is an area where local solutions in China and Europe can be shared and give a sense of complementary action at each end of the huge Eurasian landmass. There are good suggestions in the just-published book by Julian Caldecott, "Water - Life in Every Drop" (Virgin Books 2007).
