At chinadialogue, we use debate and discussion to find solutions to shared global issues. Volunteers with good language skills in both Chinese and English are a crucial part of our unique bilingual forum.
Being a volunteer at chinadialogue is flexible: our bilingual volunteers are invited to moderate and translate comments whenever they have time. It is an opportunity to practice your translation skills, increase your knowledge of climate change and environmental issues, and meet other bilingual people with similar interests.
chinadialogue currently has around 200 volunteers. They include students, teachers, journalists, researchers and linguists. You can find out more about them by joining the "chinadialogue volunteers" group on Facebook.
“Want less,” are such sincere words. Humans are instigated by modern society to have all kinds of desires. They need the courage to admit to their excessive desires and have the self-control to give them up. It is the same concept as “put down the knife and instantly become Buddha” [repent and be absolved of one’s crimes]. If you are determined, how could you not succeed? It's up to whether or not humans show signs of repentance.
Buddha says that desire is the source of suffering.
I agree in part.
Desire is part of human nature.
I think that desire on a material level should be reduced, because there is only one planet earth. But desire on a spiritual level should be encouraged. Reading books, appreciating music; these kinds of things don't harm people, nature or planet earth.

Official Policy
Wanting less, is that for the Chinese Communist Party or to be the official policy for the Chinese people to endure?
who are we? homo sapiens sapiens? or homo sapians commercials. our modern society moves forward by creating unbridled desires: cars, private planes, space travelling and so on and so on. stopping that suddenly people will get lost. then what to pursuit?
Who says that reading books and appreciating music have no harmful environmental impacts? How many trees need to be cut down to make a book? And - unless you are just talking about singing - making music also uses up natural resources, which are required to manufacture the instruments.
