Many places across China are suffering varying degrees of soil contamination due to a number of different causes; the situation is critical to the health of ecosystems, food safety and the development of sustainable farming, said the minister.

150 million mu (10 million hectares) of land - a tenth of China's total arable land area - suffers from soil pollution, according to the ongoing investigation. Most of the contamination is concentrated around relatively developed areas.
