More than 4,000 companies operating in China were listed in an online database of air polluters, state media reported on Thursday.

The list, which is featured on the China Air Pollution Map website, includes subsidiaries of Sinopec, China Youth Daily reported.

"The database collects the bad records of polluters since 2004," Ma Jun, director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, which sponsored the database, was quoted as saying.

All of the information was collected from the official websites of environmental protection departments or government news releases, Ma added.

Ma said he hoped the database would pressure polluters to clean up their act and encourage public supervision of companies’ pollution records, the report added.
