Southwest China residents are discussing the future of the Nu River, a report in the South China Morning Post said on Monday, amid rumours that work will soon start on a series of controversial hydropower dams.
China Huadian, the developers of the proposed series of 13 dams, have begun final preparations for the Liuku hydropower station near Xiaoshaba, Lushui county, the newspaper report said.
The plans were shelved in 2004 after a public outcry. It is now unclear, the report said, whether the government has approved any of the projects. A top local official reportedly denied that Beijing has approved the work.
