Climate change threatens seagrasses
Submerged meadows of seagrass, which sustain various marine creatures and provide raw materials for household goods in Europe and Africa, are threatened by global warming, a report says.
Researchers at the Swiss-based International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said increasing water temperatures, algae growth and light reduction were harming the meadows. They say seagrass could be made more resilient by mixing genetically more diverse populations.
Seagrass is used traditionally for mattresses and roof coverings and used in medicine.
