European Union leaders could derail progress in the fight against global warming if they fail to agree financing for greenhouse-gas emissions cuts in developing countries, the United Nations’ top climate change official, Yvo de Boer, told the Financial Times. Financing is key to gaining the consent of developing countries on a post-2012 emissions accord.

Maldives “first to go carbon neutral”

The president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, plan to make his Indian Ocean nation “the world’s first carbon-neutral country” within 10 years, the British newspaper the Observer reported. Nasheed’s announcement comes just days after climate scientists issued stark new warnings about rising sea levels, which could engulf the Maldives and other low-laying countries in this century.

Climate scientists press politicians

Ending a conference in Copenhagen this week, hundreds of leading scientists warned that global warming is accelerating beyond the worst predictions and threatening to trigger "irreversible" climate shifts on the planet, Reuters reported. The climate researchers said there was no excuse for inaction and urged policy makers to act "vigorously" to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
