Sweden is to become the first country to put certified “climate-friendly” labels on food products, New Scientist reports. To earn a label under the voluntary scheme, companies must prove they have reduced their greenhouse-gas emissions. The hope is that the tags will prompt consumers to buy greener products, although there are concerns that some companies may engage in “greenwashing”.

China and other developing countries should join the United States in setting mid-century targets to cut carbon emissions, US energy secretary Steven Chu told students at Beijing's Tsinghua University, the Associated Press reported. Acknowledging that developed nations were the first to emit the greenhouse gases linked to climate change, Chu said: “We are all in this together, so we have to fix it together.”

The oil giant Exxon Mobil said it will make its first major investment – US$600 million -- in biofuels, joining the California-based biotech company Synthetic Genomics to develop transportation fuels from algae, the Associated Press reported. “This is not going to be easy, and there are no guarantees of success,” said Emil Jacobs, a vice president at Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering Company.
