Earth’s tropical zone “is expanding”

Climate change is rapidly expanding the size of the earth's tropical zone, threatening to bring disease and drought to heavily populated areas, Agence France-Presse reported, citing an Australian study. Researchers concluded that the tropics had widened by up to 500 kilometres in the past 25 years. The zone now extends well beyond the band circling the planet between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Hunger “may define 21st century”

As the earth's climate changes and farmers struggle to grow enough food, hunger may become “the defining human tragedy of this century”, the Guardian reported, citing a report by Oxfam International. Some of the world's staple crops will be affected by drought and altered rainfall patterns, Oxfam said, and the implications for millions of people could be disastrous.

Ice near Greenland at “800-year low”

Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean between Greenland and the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago is now at its lowest level since the 13th century, according to research published in the journal Climate Dynamics, according to ScienceDaily. The Danish findings are based on nature’s own climate “archive” – ice cores and tree rings – as well as ships’ log books and harbour records.
