Large Aral Sea shrinks further

The eastern lobe of the disaster-struck Aral Sea seems to have shrunk by four-fifths in just three years, according to the European Space Agency (ESA), Agence France-Presse reported. The central Asian sea – once the world's fourth-largest inland body of water – is now a byword for environmental devastation. It has been retreating for five decades, since rivers that fed it were diverted for Soviet cotton-irrigation projects.

Refrigerants “add to global warming”

Because of their projected growth in developing nations, modern refrigerants designed to protect the earth’s ozone layer are set to become a major contributor to global warming, Nature reported, citing a Dutch study. The findings will encourage the efforts of environmentalists and others who have been pushing for aggressive new regulations to govern hydrofluorocarbon chemicals (HFCs).

EU makes carbon-capture moves

The European Union is taking the first steps in a process to help China and India develop technology to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and store it underground, Reuters reported. The consultation process -- on how finance and technology should be delivered to China and later India -- could be critical in securing their commitment to a new global climate deal in Copenhagen in December.
