Researchers concluded that the tropics had widened by up to 500 kilometres in the past 25 years. The zone now extends well beyond the band circling the planet between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

To protect themselves from possible exploitation, the countries would need to set up rules to govern land buys, said Marilou Uy, of the bank’s Africa financial and private-sector development department.
