Climate change is rapidly expanding the size of the earth's tropical zone, threatening to bring disease and drought to heavily populated areas, Agence France-Presse reported, citing an Australian study. Researchers concluded that the tropics had widened by up to 500 kilometres in the past 25 years. The zone now extends well beyond the band circling the planet between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Still, Arctic nations say they will avoid “cold war” scrambles linked to climate change, Reuters reported. The six nations around the Arctic Ocean are promising to cooperate on issues such as possible new fishing grounds and shipping routes.

Africa urged to set farmland rules

African nations may have to institute a code of conduct for farmland purchases by foreigners seeking to secure their own food supplies, according to a World Bank official, Reuters reported. To protect themselves from possible exploitation, the countries would need to set up rules to govern land buys, said Marilou Uy, of the bank’s Africa financial and private-sector development department.
