Across much of northern India, the Guardian reported, a late monsoon and the driest June for 83 years are exacerbating the effects of a widespread drought, pitting neighbour against neighbour in a fight for water. The United Nations has long warned that water shortages will become one of the world's most pressing problems. India's current situation is seen as a foretaste of the future.

Ice melting fast in southern Andes

Glaciers in the Southern Patagonia Ice Field, in the Chilean and Argentine Andes, are disappearing at much faster rates than scientists had anticipated, the Santiago Times reported. The ice sheets are melting in larger proportions and in much higher alpine zones than in any other part of the world, including the Himalayas and Alaska, say scientists from the United States and Chile.

Glacier melt floods Silk Road region

The Chinese gateway to the ancient Silk Road is being flooded due to climate change, New Scientist reported, citing new research. Above the Hexi corridor in Gansu province, scientists said, melting glaciers are contributing to regional floods. The findings are a stark warning for the coming decades: arid regions next to glaciers will face flooding, then dry up completely when the glaciers are gone.
