China may lift tiger bone ban

China has prohibited sales of captive-bred tiger bones for the past 14 years, but may not be able to maintain the ban, a senior conservation official was reported as saying on Tuesday.
China has come under pressure from tiger farmers to re-open the lucrative business.
Wang Wei, deputy director of the department of wildlife conservation at the State Forestry Administration said the ban was still in place, but added that the issue is open for review.
The ban won’t be there forever, given the strong voices from tiger farmers, experts and society, Wang told the China Daily.
China’s population of wild tigers has almost been wiped out, with only 50 left in the north-east of the country. But commercial farmers have reared about 5,000 in captivity. Each year, 1,000 new cubs are born.
