China to establish protection zones in areas prone to sandstorms

China has set up 58 protection zones, 51,000 sq km in total, in areas vulnerable to sandstorms in north China’s Hebei Province, Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, and Tianjin Municipality, said China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqing.
Trees will be planted in the protection zones in an effort to control sandstorms.

After nearly a decade of research, it has been determined that sandstorms sweep into north China from Mongolia through Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region and Gansu Province.
