Global business leaders present a post-Kyoto plan to G8

Detailed climate-change recommendations -- backed by chief executives of some of the world's biggest corporations – were delivered on Friday to Japan's prime minister, Yasuo Fukuda, who is to host the annual G8 summit in July.

The document, which outlines a more "environmentally effective and economically efficient" long-term policy framework to succeed the Kyoto Protocol, was presented on behalf of the World Economic Forum to the Group of Eight leadership.

The executives urged adoption of a rapid and fundamental strategy by governments to bring about a low-carbon global economy. They called on the G8 and governments of other developed countries to lead the way with deep, absolute cuts in their greenhouse-gas emissions. They also urged the governments to work with the international business community to develop carbon-reduction opportunities.
