Chinese cities open “environment exchanges”

Shanghai and Beijing have launched two emissions-trading and environmental information centres, known as environment and energy exchanges, as the country steps up its green efforts, state media reported.

The Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange will provide a platform for emissions trading deals between companies and institutions, the report said. 

The exchange in Beijing will mainly provide information on trading schemes for sulphur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand, a measure of water pollution, it added.

The northern Chinese city of Tianjin is also planning to set up an environment and energy exchange.
