UK wind enters new league

The world’s largest offshore wind farm was launched today in Thanet, South England. The 300 megawatt farm, constructed by Swedish power company Vatenfall, will power approximately 200,000 homes and take the UK's total wind energy capacity to 5.1 gigawatts, according to BusinessGreen.

Speaking before the official opening ceremony for the wind farm, local MP and chinadialogue board member Laura Sandys said: “Today is a really important day for Thanet. I have been a passionate advocate of the wind farms and believe that this now places Thanet at the heart of wind-farm development in the UK.”

But the Thanet farm won’t be the largest for long. Vatenfall now plans to move ahead with a 1,200 megawatt wind farm in East Anglia in the east of England.

Now more than ever…

News from England

The former 'empire where the sun never sets' seems to attach a lot of importance to having a globally dominant role in the renewable energy sector. Unfortunately, the dragon coming from the eatern winds has preceded it. China's annual new electric power capacity reaches 70000 MW, surpassing Great Britain's total national capacity. Up-and-coming, the new power is particularly fierce but still very modest and humble in admitting its dominance. Oriental people are rather reserved, hiding their capacities and biding their time.
