Arctic ice melt ‘opens Northwest Passage’

Arctic ice has shrunk to the lowest level on record, the Associated Press reported satellite evidence as showing, raising the possibility that the fabled Northwest Passage may become an open shipping lane.

Reports cited the European Space Agency as saying an ice-free passage had been photographed along northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland.

The Northwest Passage could reduce the journey from Europe to Asia by thousands of kilometres by bypassing the Panama Canal.
