East China city hails car ban ‘success’

A week-long ban on private cars over the recent National Day holiday saved almost US$160,000 and brought cleaner air to Fuyang, in Anhui province, the Beijing News reported on Tuesday.

Fuyang only allowed buses and other forms of public transport in an effort to combat "car wheel corruption", the Beijing News said.

Not only was there a noticeable improvement in the environment, but the city and its residents also saved 1.2 million yuan in petrol and other costs, the report said.
