China’s city of ice heats up

Harbin is feeling the effects of global warming first-hand, state media reported on Friday, saying the northeast China city, which is famed for its elaborate ice sculptures, had recorded its highest annual average temperature.

The city’s average annual temperature was 6.6 degrees Celsius in 2007, the report said, the highest since records began in 1881.

"The record high annual average temperature was not incidental," Yin Xuemian, a senior meteorologist at the city observatory, was quoted as saying. "It was closely related to the global warming trend."
