UK restaurants urged to serve free tap water

Government ministers and the UK's biggest water provider will urge restaurants to routinely serve free tap water, citing concerns about the carbon footprint and cost of bottled water, the Guardian reported.

Britons drink 3 billion bottles of bottled water every year. Half a billion are flown or shipped in from overseas, which is estimated to produce about 33,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, the report said.

Thames Water will this month announce a campaign to encourage catering outlets to serve tap water without customers having to ask for it.
